Jeroen Hoenderkamp (interim regiodirecteur Parkstad) heeft In zijn rol als manager Stragtegie & Kennisontwikkeling bij Koraal mede aan de basis gestaan van de ontwikkeling van Trauma Informed binnen Koraal. 

In zijn bijdrage vertelt hij het eerlijke verhaal over de keuzes van Koraal voor een trauma informed wetenschappelijk raamwerk. Langs welke paden voeren de trauma informed inzichten ons naar een toekomstkomstbesteding Koraal. Hij gaat daarbij vooral in op de veranderkundige vraagstukken die zo’n proces met zich meebrengt. En op de wijze waarop Koraal daar mee omgaat en wel en niet in slaagt. 

Vicarious Trauma and Vicarious Transformation

Het Traumatic Stress Institute in Amerika is expert op het gebied van de implementatie van trauma-informed care. In deze plenaire Engelstalige sessie zullen Steve Brown (directeur TSI) en Patricia Wilcox (vice-voorzitter strategieontwikkeling TSI) ingaan op het concept ‘vicarious trauma'.

Het werk kan veel plezier, voldoening en ontwikkelkansen geven. Maar medewerkers worden ook blootgesteld aan het lijden, de stress en de ingrijpende levensverhalen van de ander en dit kan lijden tot uitputting en hun wereldbeeld negatief beïnvloeden. Het is niet de vraag óf dit gebeurt, maar wánneer.

Kernovertuigingen over veiligheid en vertrouwen kunnen veranderen, net als de wijze waarop zij relaties vormgeven en hun emoties reguleren. Medewerkers kunnen gaan twijfelen over de betekenis van hun werk. Ze kunnen minder optimistisch worden over de kansen die de ander nog zal krijgen in het leven. Of hoop op ontwikkeling of verandering verliezen.

In deze plenaire sessie wordt stilgestaan bij kenmerken van vicarious trauma en de risico's, maar bovenal bij de wijze waarop medewerkers ondersteund kunnen worden om dit risico te verkleinen een veerkrachtig functioneren te versterken. 

Steve Brown en patricia Wilcox vertellen hierover 'Our work with people that have suffered trauma is difficult. We use ourselves as our primary tool. Therefore, it is not surprising that the work affects us as people in many of the same ways that trauma affects survivors. This workshop will explore vicarious trauma (VT), the negative ways in which being empathetically involved with and responsible for people who have experienced trauma affects treaters over time. We will look at individual, client and organizational determinants of VT, and actions we can take at all levels to manage VT’s impact on t ourselves and each other. We will also investigate vicarious transformation: the ways in which are work helps us grow and develop into better people. Strategies to maximize this growth will be included' .

Steve Brown, Psy.D., is the Director of the Traumatic Stress Institute (TSI) of Klingberg Family Centers whose mission is to foster transformation in organizations and systems to trauma-informed care. A clinical psychologist, he is a primary architect of TSI's internationally recognized Whole System Change Model to Trauma-Informed Care which uses Risking Connection training as its core offering. In 2020, he authored the adaption of Risking Connection to organizations serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). With Dr. Courtney Baker, he developed the Attitudes Related to Trauma-Informed Care (ARTIC) Scale, one of the first, and currently the most widely–used psychometric measure of TIC. Dr. Brown presents nationally about TIC implementation and TIC measurement and is the co-author of numerous journal articles on those subjects. In addition to being a psychologist, he is a long-time sexuality educator/trainer and author of Streetwise to Sex-Wise: Sexuality Education for High Risk Youth, a sexuality education curricula used internationally by agencies and schools serving high risk youth.



 

Patricia Wilcox, LCSW, is the Vice President for Strategic Development at Klingberg Family Centers, in New Britain, Connecticut. She specializes in helping organizations improve their treatment of traumatized people. She created the Restorative Approach™, a trauma- and relationship-based treatment. She is a Faculty Trainer for Risking Connection® and an Adjunct Faculty at the University of CT School of Social Work and the University of St. Joseph’s.  She has presented extensively on using neuroscience to improve our workplaces and increase our commitment to social justice. In 2012 she was chosen as the Connecticut NASW Social Worker of the Year, and in 2022 was designated a Soroptimist Exceptional Woman.
